The Ol’ School House

As many of you may know, last summer Nat Greene petitioned the Attorney Generals office regarding the Monon Center’s Board attempt to sell off the building and its contents.  The basis of our concerns along with the petition signed by over 225 local citizens was the simple understanding that this property was conveyed for safe keeping and to be held in perpetuity for the benefit and enjoyment of Greensboro Area residents.  This understanding is further supported in their mission statement and charter that the Monon Center was to be operated as a Museum and Community Center.

Although the entire affair has become increasingly muddied over the past few years, with bad feelings and missed opportunities – it appears that there will be some closure shortly.  In a recent request from the Attorney Generals office – it was stated that the State believe that the Board is defunct and that it has no right to convert donated assets into any other form (such as a Scholarship Fund).  Additionally, the State would seek a local non-profit to uphold the original spirit and intent of the Non-Profit Agency.

Obviously, everyone at Nat Greene is excited to hear this news as well as see that our State Government does support the little people and help to preserve ideals of Honesty and Duty to the public.

We look forward to keeping you posted and continue to appreciate your support not only here in town but out in the general public as well.
