Who: The Nathanael Greene Community Development Corporation in cooperation with the Village of Greensboro. What: Locking through Gray's Landing Lock & Dam Where: Potters’ Landing ADA-accessible kayak launch on the Monongahela River @ intersection of Stone and Front Street, Greensboro, PA 15338. When: Start time is 9:30 a.m., July 23, 2022. Tours will be staggered depending on attendance. Why: Navigating a kayak through a US Army Corps of Engineers' lock built for large commercial tows and barges can be intimidating, especially for someone in a small watercraft. This event will give participants the exciting opportunity to learn how to safely lock through these massive structures. How: Following a safety brief, trip leaders will take groups of paddlers downriver to nearby Gray's Landing Lock & Dam. Paddlers will enter the lock, tie up using self-provided 75 ft. ropes, wait for the lock chamber to lower to the downriver pool, then exit. After a short paddle on the downstream pool, paddlers will enter the lock again, wait for the chamber to fill, then exit into the upper pool. Paddlers may either continue to explore the river or exit at the launch. The entire trip should take about 2 hours. Conditions: This event will occur rain or shine unless severe weather or unsafe river conditions are expected. Organizers will inform paddlers of cancellation 24 hours before the paddle. What to bring: A kayak, 75 ft. of rope, life jackets, water, sunscreen, binoculars, water-friendly clothes and shoes, snacks, dry bag for personal items, as desired. Registration: Spaces are limited. Please make your reservation by July 18 by emailing [email protected] or call 313.613.2509 Donations: A donation to the NGCDC of at least $5 is appreciated. Parking: Some parking available at the launch; or, park at Monview Park and walk, bike or carpool a half-mile to the launch.
